A Local’s Pick of Bangkok’s Best Shopping Malls

Our pick and explanation of the most popular shopping malls around central Bangkok that are easy to reach and in convenient areas, connected to trains and public transit.

The list of shopping malls in this post is not a ranking of how good each of them is, but rather an explanation of what each mall is, who it may be targeted towards, and why you may want to visit. It is already a selection of the locals’ favourite and a good spot for tourists.

Dear Travellers,

Bangkok is full of department stores, as the weather is hot all year long, shopping malls are a popular option for locals to hang out. For that reason, the malls here are often well-designed and offer a variety of shops, restaurants, and things to do and see, with some places having over 500 stores or more.

Many of the local of Bangkok spend weekends or after-work hours in these shopping malls with their family, friends, and even meetings with clients for work.

Siam Paragon (& Siam Area)

One of the most popular department stores in Bangkok, Siam Paragon, is located in the BTS Siam station, which is the busiest station that is a connection between Sukhumvit and Silom lines.

If you also want to shop outside of the typical mall setting, the ‘hot’ Siam Area, as the locals call it, is probably the best place to do so. To get there, simply walk to the BTS Sky Train connection on the M floor and cross over to the opposite side.

The Who

It has certainly become one of the most touristic shopping malls in the city, often becoming a must-visit for tourists. • SookSiam: An indoor street food floating market, a good start to experience Bangkok street food culture for the first time.

Tip for visiting Bangkok Department Stores:

Food courts, which provide a relatively cheaper option inside a shopping mall, exist in most of the places mentioned. They provide a street food selection at a higher price than what you get from the street, but in many cases, also more hygienic. We do recommend first-time visitors try them in one of the malls before experiencing them around Bangkok.

There is a common layout that helps you navigate the different department stores more efficiently:

  • Food Courts are often either on the ground or underground floor, or on the upper, closer to the top floor of each department store
  • Restaurants are often on both the bottom and top levels, with some scattered around other floors.
  • Fashion and technology occupy most of the middle levels.
  • Department areas that are open shops, not specific brand stores with divided walls and doors, are often divided into sections on different levels, for example, women’s fashion on the first floor, men’s fashion on the second, kids’ section on the third, etc.
  • A section of some malls will be dedicated to banking services.
  • Groceries are often on the ground floor or the top floor (before the cinema)
  • Cinemas are almost always on the top floor.
  • There will often be a hotel connected to these shopping malls: Siam Kempinski connected to Paragon Department store, Park Hyatt connected to Central Embassy, Emporium Suite by Chatrium connected to Emporium (Emdistrict), Centara Grand connected to Central World, Dusit Thani connected to Dusit Central Park, etc.

BTS and MRT stations are also connected in the same way. Visit our Sukhumvit to Siam guide for more specific information around each.

Additional Shopping Mall Facts

Most of the Malls in Bangkok are operated by two major companies, Central Group and The Mall Group, and both of them have the expertise to design a department store correctly.

The ones from Central are easy to notice, as there will be the word “Central” in the name, and most of the places featured here are owned or operated by them. They are also publicly traded on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

The Mall Group is also very dominant in the field, having major malls like Paragon and Emdistrict under its management.

Both The Mall Group and Central also have their own membership program for the shoppers, M Card, and The 1. Most people in Bangkok are a part of these program which offers many benefits like discounts and free parking, which become better the more you shop with them.

There are many other famous department stores that are not featured in this article, like Gaysorn, MBK, Terminal 21, Samyarn Mitrtown, and many others, like Central Westgate and The Mall Lifestore Bangkapi, that cater more toward the local market in each area around Bangkok. They are all good malls as well, and have interesting, unique aspects to them if you want to explore beyond the major ones we recommended.

It is common for food and beverages to cost more in these department stores as the cost for rent is higher and the quality of being ‘premium’ is often associated with the stores that choose to open inside them.

Our Guide Conclusion

From our personal experience, without bias, we do feel like Bangkok has the edge over many places when it comes to department stores, even from a country like Japan.

The hot climate has pushed the standard of indoor shopping to a high level.

With that said, repetition does occur in many department stores when it comes to international brands. Many stores like Uniqlo, Muji, Luis Vuitton, etc., are ubiquitous amongst many of the malls, which is convenient for locals but may be uninteresting for tourists. The architecture and layout, however, will remain vastly different, each with its unique designs, and specific cafes, restaurants, and more niche stores will vary.

For locals, the malls around the city are a meeting point, a space for gatherings, hangouts, and the most common form of attraction within the city among many groups of residents. Sometimes specific department stores are chosen to be visited depending on the specific shop, cafe, and restaurant that are only in that place. Sometimes we switch them around so it feels less boring to hang out at, and other times many go there just to get some walk in the air conditioning.
