What does the New Year look like in Queenstown, for a travel destination that is known for nature? We spent our New Year’s of 2026 in Queenstown, and this article will explore how we felt about the experience.
Dear Travellers,
As one of the most popular tourist spots in the South Island of New Zealand, Queenstown is undoubtedly one of the most luscious celebrations around. But what is it like to be there?
The Town
Thinking of New Zealand as a whole, one may not expect such a lively atmosphere or a huge party, of which half of what you may believe is correct.
In Queenstown, it does get lively and very packed in the town center, most notably on Beach Street, and the area where the Queenstown market is, next to the lake. There is also a stage set, with a concert in Earnslaw Park, not that big but lively.
There will be small stalls set up along the lakefront, like Queenstown market, but late into the night. Famous places like Fergburger and Patagonia Ice Creamery will both have an impressively long line, one is a few buildings long, and the other up to the second floor, respectively. There are also some street performances and many people drinking and relaxing beside the lake.
A bit further away on foot from the town center area, however, things get back to being quiet quite quickly. There are still quite a lot of people around, but mainly just relaxing and taking a stroll, waiting for the fireworks.
The New Year Fireworks
The New Year’s Fireworks at Queenstown will be held on the Waikatipu Lake. It is a very good spot as there will be places to sit all around the waterfront area, making it a little less crowded. We secured our seat on the rocks at Saint Omer Park, Queenstown, across the Roki Collection Hotel, around an hour before the fireworks began.
It was quiet there; many people were also sitting by the lake waiting for the New Year. A lot of them were older couples and families, and all of us sat in silence; only the sound of the waves hitting the rocks was heard.
It is a nice atmosphere and a little different way to enjoy the New Year. Coming from a place like Bangkok, where loud music can be heard and parties are held all around the city, it was a pleasing change this year.
The Firework Begins
At 10 seconds before midnight, only an inaudible, faint sound of people counting down the seconds was heard from the town center area; all of us here remained quiet. Some people were asleep beside the lake and were woken up by the explosive sound of the New Year’s fireworks celebration, as it lit up the completely dark sky in colors.
Many ducks and birds around the lake probably thought the world was ending that night.
For us humans, it was time to pick up our phones. Many people walking by the lake came to a stop on the street; for a few minutes, every eye in the town was reflecting the different colors that popped up in the night sky.
The firework was not an overtly grand one, only just big enough to be called a New Year’s celebration, which is expected. It lasted for a good duration, around 15 minutes to be exact. We got this number from the time our photos were taken on our phone, from the moment it started at midnight to the moment we got up and left.
If fireworks are the thing you are specifically looking for, a firework festival in Japan may be of great interest; they do one that lasts for an hour there, during other times of the year, mainly summer.
Right after that, a 15-minute New Year fireworks display, the night ended for many of us there, as well as our 2025. For us, and many around us, that was all we sought, and once it ended, the crowd dispersed, returning silent to the lake and its inhabitants. The area of restaurants and bars in the town center, however, seemed to go on for a bit longer in a new energy of 2026.
Our thoughts on spending a New Year in Queenstown
This year, Queenstown was the middle of our month-long trip in New Zealand, where we visited other lakefront towns like Lake Tekapo, Lake Wanaka, Mount Hutt, and many other places, including a stay on Waiheke Island in summer. We have been here before, as well as all the places mentioned; this time, we are bringing our family here.
Queenstown was the place we stopped by before departing the South Island by plane to Wellington, where we also shared some tips and hacks for a more relaxing plane experience from Queenstown.
The Cost
Let us first explore one of the most concerning aspects one should consider for a New Year’s vacation: the price. Like most destinations in the world, the season is one of the times you will see the prices in hotels and car rental spike the highest, and Queenstown is no exception.
It will be an expensive trip. While the food cost will generally remain the same, Queenstown is not exactly cheap to begin with.
With a huge price gap during the few days from already high costs, we would not recommend this time for a first-time visit to the town, but for those returning, you may find the town in the peak of lively atmosphere, which might be a little different from the more relaxed feel you are used to.
Is the celebration in Queenstown worth the stay and the price?
Chances are, if you are traveling to New Zealand, you are probably not looking for a lively travel full of parties, but a quiet, relaxing trip to peaceful, incredible nature and adventure. With that, celebrating a New Year in Queenstown should not be a disappointment for you.
The town provides a balanced choice between a lively atmosphere and a quieter New Year experience. Meaning you have the choices of letting loose a little in the energetic town center area or a quieter quality time with your travel partners, families, or alone somewhere beside the lake, enjoying the fireworks from afar.
To be frank, we would not say that the cost of any good hotels and accommodations in the world on New Year’s night is worth paying; however, if you can find a justifiable deal somewhere, then it might be worth it.
The Hotels, Airbnbs, and Restaurants Recommendation
By booking an Airbnb or the hotels and resorts further away from the main shopping area during the New Year season, you can also choose to escape the loud noises; a 10-minute walk away from Beach St should suffice, even one of the accommodations along Lake Esplanade is not that loud, excluding the sound of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
We stayed at an Airbnb on top of the hill near Thompson Street, and it was completely quiet, albeit a little hard to climb the slope every time we went outside on foot. Visit this link if you are interested.
We have also stayed at Holiday Inn Queenstown Remarkables Park near Queenstown Airport, a hotel by IHG that offers a very scenic view of the mountain range, which is called The Remarkables, and it is, as the name suggests, very remarkable. Staying around there is a little quieter; there are restaurants and shops around, but you would require a car to get to the lakefront part of the town, around a 15-minute drive.
Accommodation cost was definitely the highest for our stay in Queenstown during the New Year. We recommend you book months in advance before your stay, and do not forget to explore places on Airbnb as an alternative to a hotel.
If money is not one of your worries for this trip, a hotel like ROKI Collection may suit your taste. We had our first meal of the year there at The Terrace Restaurant by ROKI Collection. The view from this hotel is probably one of the most beautiful in the resort town.
We do recommend reservations during dinner time at nicer restaurants, especially during holidays, as they will be fully booked. Lunch is not a problem in our experience; even during this peak time, we can do a walk-in to most places we choose.
For a couple of nice restaurants in town, we can recommend The Terrace Restaurant by ROKI Collection and Rātā (an award-winning restaurant). We would highly recommend Rātā; we have thoroughly enjoyed most of the dishes served there, especially the vintage cheddar donut, which we ended up ordering 4 servings of.
The Terrace Restaurant at ROKI also has a bar area, called The Library Bar, which is very well decorated, clad in gold.
Queenstown offers a nice and relaxing experience even during the few days of the New Year break. The town attracted quite a few more tourists during the season, but still offers breathing room around and is not too densely packed, minus the few popular places that require queuing; those places are skipable if you do not feel like lining up, in our honest opinion.
If you are interested in a more lively and energetic atmosphere, we would recommend Bangkok as your destination, and here is the area where we recommend, as a local, for your stay.
We hope you enjoy,
Travel Tegami
